Marques Houston will be teaming up again with Chris Stokes in another hip hop dance film called ‘Boogie Town’ with Vanessa Simmons, Brenda Strong and newcomer Mykal Anthony Bean featured in the film as well.
‘Boogie Town,’ a modern day West Side Story for the hip hop generation, takes place in a New York City of the near future. In a society where battle dancing has been outlawed, illegal dance contests now take place in the underground world of ‘Boogie Town.’ Micah (Houston) and Jay (Bean), leaders of rival dance crews, possess ‘Herculean’ powers which take the battles to extreme levels. Despite the animosity between the two crews, Micah falls in love with Jay’s beautiful sister Natalie and the two become a future-day Romeo and Juliet.
Variety states that Vivendi Entertainment has nabbed all rights to the film, which will be released theatrically in Summer 2009.
Stokes and Houston worked together on the hip-hop themed ‘You Got Served,’ a sleeper hit released by Screen Gems in 2004 and grossed over $40 million in domestic box office.
Monique Scott and Cheryl Trimmer will also serve as producers. Additionally, Stokes has brought on Shane Sparks (‘America’s Best Dance Crew,’ ‘You Think You Can Dance’) to choreograph the film.
Simmons is the oldest daughter and child of Reverend Run of the hip-hop group Run D.M.C. She is seen in the MTV reality series, Run’s House.
