GO SEE Slumdog Millionaire

No, seriously. This is a brilliant, brilliant film. Review coming soon, but I wanted take a minute and remind folks that this movie is out. Get thee to an art house and check this out.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is the story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”

But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions.

Intrigued by Jamal’s story, the jaded Police Inspector begins to wonder what a young man with no apparent desire for riches is really doing on this game show?

When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out…

Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE stars Dev Patel, Madhur Mittal, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan. The film is based on the best selling novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup. Studio: Fox Searchlight.

there’s always a short piece online or in the Times about why I should go see some indie movie. I never do. I wasn’t really in the mood for “Day the Earth Stood Still” this weekend, so I decided to give this a shot. This is one of the best films I’ve ever seen. It is about people in India, but not really. It could easily be about anybody who grew up poor or disenfranchised. Anyone who has had to overcome something, or basically anyone who has ever had a dream that seemed really far away.

If this is the kind of independent movies that are being made these days, I may take a break from Hollywood for the holidays and see more. More indie suggestions, BBO!
