LONDON — A starry cast including Dougray Scott, Joely Richardson, Brian Cox, Eddie Izzard, Jason Priestley and Vanessa Redgrave have been lined up for U.K. shingle Power’s latest miniseries, a modern take on British sci-fi classic “The Day of the Triffids” co-produced with Canada’s Prodigy Pictures.
“ER” and “Law & Order” scribe Patrick Harbinson penned the script based on John Wyndham’s bestselling 1951 novel.
“The incredible cast lined up for ‘The Day of the Triffids’ is testament to the quality of Patrick Harbinson’s script,” said Julie Gardner, head of drama, BBC Wales.
Two-parter will air on the BBC in Blighty this year.
“The Day of the Triffids” is set in the not-too-distant future, where scientists create and cultivate a plant called the triffid that provides an alternative fuel supply — with devastating results.
The book was adapted by BBC Radio in 1953, 1957 and 1968. A BBC TV production followed in 1981.
In 2001 writer Lance Dann adapted the story into two hourlong episodes for the BBC World Service.
