Drop Squad is a 1994 comedy about an underground militant group that kidnaps African-Americans who have sold out their race. The story follows as the group, led by Vondie Curtis-Hall and Ving Rhames kidnaps an advertising executive (Eric La Salle) who has been providing advertising programs that belittles blacks and women. One advertisement features Spike Lee endorsing a “Gospel pak”, Fried Chicken which comes in a bucket with the Confederate flag on it.
Drop Squad, along with other films of the time, including “CB4″ and “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka”, articulated the differences of opinions in the Black community in the early 90s, where “positive” pro-black ideals and “gangsta” culture clashed. It could be argued that “gangsta” won, which makes films like these all the more important. Every few years, “positivity” comes back into vogue, and Black people demand more of ourselves and our surroundings. “Drop Squad” represents the idea that some of us demand better — and Blacker — ALL the time.
This film is available right now on DVD.
This was/is an absolute classic. It was missed by many but, boy it was so on point. I still quote lines from it today. Most often I refer to the tittle when I see the need of services rendered! Nuff said.
