Directed by Anthony Simmons and starring Norman Beaton (who later became known from the TV series “Desmond’s), “Black Joy” is adapted from Dark Days and Light Nights, a stage play by Jamal Ali. It’s the story of an immigrant country boy from Guyana who comes to Brixton, London and gets shown the streets on 70′s London. This film was released in 1977, and has been described as the UK’s only example of a “Blaxploitation” movie. Starring: Trevor Thomas, Floella Benjamin, Dawn Hope, Oscar James, Paul Medford, Linda Lewis, Kevin O’Shea, and Vivian Stanshall.
Here’s one of our favorite scenes from the film.
This film is VERY difficult to find, and is one of those films that will quite possibly require a translator, even though the entire thing is in English. So we totally understand if you’ll need to rewind this scene a few times. It is SO worth tracking down, though.
See, now I gotta have this on DVD.
