Back in March we told you about Lionsgate’s plans for Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf”.
At the time, Lionsgate’s President of Motion Picture Production Mike Paseornek said: “Nzingha Stewart has written a masterful adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s original play, and Lionsgate is very excited about introducing this remarkable work to a new generation via the big screen.”
Today, Lionsgate announced that Tyler Perry will be taking over the project. Tyler will write, direct, and produce for 34th Street. “For Colored Girls” will begin shooting in Atlanta in November with Lionsgate planning a release in 2010.
I fear the outcome given the seriousness of this drama. While I respect the achievements of Tyler Perry I find that his movies and plays are formulaic and thus predictable. While the Mu Dear character offers comic relief to aid in dealing with serious issues such as abuse one might make the argument that in some ways she can be viewed as a modern day version of Mammy.
Does Ms. Shange know about this?
lol this one story has exploded today!
I heard For Colored Girls is going up on a mainstage in Hollywood. Does anybody know when?
