Fall TV Lineup: Black is Back in a Major Way

Derek Luke is in "trauma"

Last week NAACP Executive Director Vic Bulluck critized the Emmy Awards presentation on CBS for its lack of “people of color,” both as presenters — only three out of 39 total presenters represented a minority — and in content, challenging the networks for having a lack of vision. While it remains to be seen if the President Obama factor will have much influence, there are a substantial number of people of color represented in front of the camera in the shows this season.

There are more family comedies than ever and FOX is premiering two that feature black families in their lineup — Brothers, with Michael Strahan and the animated The Cleveland Show that premiered this past Sunday. The Family Guy spinoff focuses on Cleveland Brown and his son who marries his first love Donna (voiced by Sanaa Lathan).

TNT’s Hawthorne stars Jada Pinkett which has been renewed for a second season. Regina King is doing fine work on NBC’s cop drama Southland. And newcomer Amber Riley has made a mark on Fox’s Glee.

Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher) played Sean Combs in Notorious and is now also one of the leads in NBC’sTrauma. He has received good notices for playing a paramedic and he’s joined in the cast by New Zealander Cliff Curtis, who is of Maori descent and starred in Once We Were Warriors and Whale Rider. Grammy award winning LL Cool J is partnered with Chris O’Donnell on NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS.

Sherri Shepherd, comedian, actress and co-host of ABC’s The View stars in her own show, Sherri. In the Lifetime comedy based on Shepherd’s real life, she plays a newly single mom who works as a comedian and is trying to balance the two, while also dealing with her ex-husband, played by Malcolm Jamal Warner or Theo on The Cosby Show.
