Jefferey Wright, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Vera Farmiga in “Source Code”

One of the best (and most overlooked) science fiction films released last year was “Moon”. All sci-fi doesn’t have to be explosions and girls in tight outfits. There’s room for that, of course, but I’d prefer it if there were less of that and more social commentary. When we talked to the director, Duncan Jones, at the press screenings last year, he mentioned he had more than just an affinity for science fiction, (you can hear him talk to us HERE) and that he was working on a new project. Jones has an appreciation for science fiction film (and apparently television) that makes his visual direction familiar yet usually very good.

He started his career as a commercial director, and “Moon” is the picture that put him on the map as a feature filmmaker. He was, in some ways, “discovered” by Trudie Styler who made the connections to get his feature made. (Trudie’s batting a thousand, by the way. She’s also the person who brought us Guy Ritchie.)

At the end of last year, the script for Jones’ next picture got around, a project called “Source Code”, that had Jake Gyllenhaal’s name attached as the lead character, Colter. Or is it Sean? Reviews of the script are consistent, in that he’s still paying homage to influential science fiction films, but that this story is very good. (check the best review of the script so far at The Playlist. There are LOTS of spoilers there, so click with caution.)

Today, the director announced via his twitter stream that he had “Just met with the lovely Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright. Feeling quite thrilled to have two such scorchingly good actors in Source Code!”

Farmiga, of course, has been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in “Up In The Air”. That’s a contest

we’ll all be watching closely for sure, as she’s up against Mo’Nique for her role in “Precious”.

What role Wright will be playing hasn’t officially been made known. “Source Code” is scheduled for release next year.
