I agree with your review. I imported this awhile back and I was was remotely interested because it was a Korean western and he had 3 great Korean actors in it. After watching it, I felt a little disappointed only because it dragged in certain points, but it ended up just being an "OK" movie. Not as great when you have those 3 actors and the director who did " A Bittersweet Life" and "A Tale of 2 Sisters"

This article is sooo fire. It’s funny because I didn’t even watch the whole show, but I saw all of the scenes you highlighted and I thought it was pretty good as well. Much better than the shows of the past.However, Queen Latifah’s stylist should be fired. She has a body that could be accentuated by much better clothing. It’s funny I’ve been so disgusted by the direction BET has gone in in the last few years, that it feels a little weird to compliment them, but they deserve this one.

What a surprise! Not happy at all. Magic Johnson Crenshaw was a favorite weekly haunt. Less than half a mile from our home, my family and I enjoyed the favorite martial arts flick, blockbuster extravaganza or popular smaller film. Of course we had to travel to other theaters miles away for films of quality like an independent film jewel. I hope Magic opens again; however, it is doubtful that we will patronize AMC theatres. After all, they abandoned this part of Los Angeles.

Walden Media is also marketing the film. Have you seen it? Also, the issue isn't people over 40, it's kids currently in the system. Who are failing. American kids should be ranked a little higher in science and math, don't you think?

I agree with Paul. Bless Me, Ultima is one of my favorite books, simply because I can relate to it. The culture, the phrases, the background, the setting (I'm from New Mexico myself). Personally, I prefer the spanish version over the english version. The english version is great, but it tends to lose itself in translation at times. Franklin better do some serious research and hit the nail on the head with this movie or he's going to offend a lot of hispanics, including me.

And why is it that there wasn't a Latino director available or willing to take on this production? How would people at large feel if there was latino director selected to do trhe Color Purple or any other Black fim? What insight can a non-latino bring to this film. I've read Bless Me Ultima several times and as a Latino I can understand its story very well and when I have had friends read it, I had to consistently go back and explain things about our culture that a non-latino doesn't quite grasp. Poor choice.

Strong piece. I saw Wattstax when it was originally released, and during the re-release in '03. In between those two viewings, I must have seen the picture at least another 15 times. It is a brilliant depiction of the soul aesthetic, and the socioeconomic conditions that lent to the creation of the music, and the mighty Stax label. Thanks for reminding us just how dope it was.

Its so amazing that critics of this documentary would call people that appreciate the work "ignorance". I am a nigerian, and I am happy that this documentary was made because I see it as an eye opener, and that's how it should be perceived by everyone. But people don't want the truth. They can't handle the truth because they still aren't ready to do anything about it.
And that is the difference between the slums in Nigeria and the slums that people refer to in developed countries. The government should try and help people and provide an alternative.
Someone said that "These things are not new; Ajegunle, Oshodi and these other slums have existed in Nigeria for ages!….Our shortcomings are our own internal matter, to be handled internally, not to be broadcast abroad by the BBC and discussed in the international arena."
It is true that the country's short comings are its internally matter because no one else is going to fix it for you. People can only talk about it and make documentaries in the hope that you will make a change. But what has the government done to eradicate this internal problem? In my opinion the government has done absolutely nothing. Im not talking about going in with government machineries and destroying people's residence and businesses, I'm talking bout the government providing people with alternatives.

I was born and breed in Nigerian but I have lived abroad for the past 10 years. A lot of my friends and families keep saying to me that "Nigeria is good now, its getting better, there's a lot of changes going on…you need to go home and see for yourself". I went back home, saw things from my own perspective, and it is true that Nigeria is getting better, but it is not good enough yet.
So I keep on saying to my families and friends, and to anyone that will care to tell me that Nigeria is getting better…that I don't want to hear it from them, I want to hear it from the 5 years old boy selling pure water on the street. I want to hear it from the heavily pregnant mother selling palm oil she carries around on her head. I want to hear it from the people living in the slums of Nigeria, then I will believe it.
Then i will know that the country cares about its people at large and not just about the wealthy.
The Lagos State Governor is doing a lot to transform the state, and I pray that he won't forget about the people that needs help the most. I hope that the affordable homes being built by the government around the country will go to people that really need it and not be corruptly distributed among friends and families.
We need to accept that there is a problem before we can find a solution to it.

Quentin “Rampage” Jackson is a perfect match for BA Barracus. His figure, his intimidating look, and his tatoos are just an addition to the already perfect match for the part. The only other attrocity that could accour from not placing Rampage in this feature, would be putting Eddie Murphy as the Riddler in any Batman movie. Rampage has the stature, the intimidation, and the the voice. But Rampage is a very nice and caring man. It could be useful for the A-Team movie.

I agree with Frank. Switching from the originally drawn character is just wrong. But shouldn’t be a black/white thing. If Samuel is Nick Fury,….then Shaft should be Asian. And Zorro should be Hindu. Tick-off enough races and everyone will want it to be kept as the ORIGINAL style.

Unlike other blogs that scrape their content from non-Black sources, we write articles here. Conduct actual interviews. Actually watch films abnd review them instead of making judgements on the trailers.

Kam Williams is one of the most prolific Black film critics in the country.

While you're on the internet making baseless claims, may we suggest you use a search engine to check your facts instead of saying nonsense to drive traffic to a site that can't be publicly accessed.

It's sad that you see journalism and believe that it has to be white. But we understand. And we appreciate the back-handed compliment.

Interesting perspective. My feelings about Mr. Perry are always mixed. On the one hand, I have loads of respect and admiration for him for being able to tap into a market and reach an amazing level of success. On the other hand, I an not a big fan of all of his work. He often operates from stereotypes and even beyond that, in my opinion lacks creativity in story telling. I enjoyed the first Why Did I Get Married, however the second installments reverts back to classic Perry, lots of unnecessary drama, little substance.

Africa is multi cultured…and we got upcoming generations that have already been exposed to all sorts of movie themes.I think the bone of contention here is do we have the capacity or done enough research in this area to have the confidence to venture into one….
And i think it's about time african directors/producers confining their target group to africa only.Look at the mexican movies….malaysian in their foreign languages/yet translated…they are moving out of their home ground and going international.Why limit your potential…??

I completely understand your point about relevancy. It's all about suspension of disbelief in film making and writing. IF your audience ( the viewer or reader) can't figure out how they would fit into the story then the story falls short. The audience must be able to buy into what ever it is you're selling be it on the screen or in print.
Relevancy is key for the suspension of disbelief. Your audience first has to believe that what you're telling them is possible. IF the audience can't make that connection you've failed them.

I'm not a parent, but I miss those weekly family movies. I think that Disney used to air them on Sunday nights in the 70's. Movies that have been remade since then, like that Parent Trap, and the Witch Mountain movies. I hope that this takes off. On a side note I am also hoping that there aren't commercials every 7 minutes as has been the case lately with major network shows & movies.

Alice, It may be due to the fact that the competing films you mentioned were released by major studios. Lions Gate is not a major and, accordingly, may not be able to command the maximum number of screens to meet demand in the face of competition from larger studios.

"Had “Hot Tub Time Machine” come out in 1998, it would probably be on my list of great comedy films."

Now that I've seen this movie, I get how great a line this is. Well said. I didn't like this movie, but like you, I didn't hate it. There were some good ideas that were just abandoned. Nick's character was set up lovely, then turned into a background player. The ending was just a mess.

Tisk Tisk the review on this book is highly inaccurate as it is one of the best books ever written. Though the writer tends to go off on Tangents that are a little too wordy, nothing else is wrong about the writer's perspective on the subject. He speaks from experience, what better teacher on any subject wouldn't you agree? There is no formal education to deal with he pressures of a relationship with a black woman so, that point being made, Jimi Israel has done the next best thing, he wrote a book, not based on theory, not based on propaganda but on cold hard facts and personal experience. Not to mention his clear and direct way of speaking to his audience, though profanity is included, you must remember that this book was meant for the African American audience, who though publicly deny an appreciation for this language secretly relish it. However this book is for every black man and for every black women, who should beyond the shadow of a doubt read it and learn from it.

His performance in Precious was great. I would love to see more of Lenny on the Big Screen. He's got the chops for it. Talent oozes out of every pore. The idea of a Romeo Blue film is real interesting.

I'm looking forward to a new album from Lenny. I am hoping that a new album it will result in a new focus in music. It certainly is time for music today to take on a new direction, focusing on raw talent (which Lenny has tons of) and away from the electro/synthro pop that has infiltrated the airwaves. We need more artists that push the boundaries of music with less focus on using technology like AutoTune. Lenny can sing and can play, we need to celebrate artists of his ilk, and move away from technicians that are dabbling in music. We need a Music Renaissance.

No, Tyler Perry isn't involved with this film. The audience in the screening I saw this in was a pretty mixed crowd, a good representation of various races of people. They seemed to enjoy the film more than I.

Would LOVE to talk to you about how you tolerated Sanaa in AVP. It's funny, I liked her work in Tyler Perry's "Family That Preys" a LOT more than her work in AVP.

I don't think this movie is produced by Tyler Perry, but he has been in the news a lot about empowerment so I want scripts like "Up in the Air" or "Hurt Locker" produced. I loved Sanaa Lathan in Alien Predator. That's much more interesting stuff and broad in appeal. These comedies mostly appeal to AA and Hispanic. How many whites are going to this? Not many. Oh but they say this movie is made for the Black and Hispanic community. That's not right. This type of movie is force fed to us so we go but we need better material. Corny.

I'll wait for it to hit cable. I hope Tyler Perry's new studio produces more than comedies. The whole Hispanic African American thing is corny too. It plays off the same jokes you see in the White / Black relationship comedies or Hispanic /White comedies like Guess Who's Coming to Dinner or Monster-In-Law. For one thing, there's no such person as Nick Fury. So he can be anything. The first time Nick Fury was ever put in a movie, he was portrayed by a white actor. Also, check the picture we chose for this piece. It's from the comics. They've changed Nick in the books (depending, of course, upon which version you read). Nobody is saying it's politically correct to have Nick Fury be Black. Nobody has said that.

Your "White guy playing Shaft" idea is interesting. You should write it!

Just got back from seeing Sherlock Holmes. I agree it is a go see movie.
Warning may contain plot spoilers!
The film's characters are flawed. And that's a good thing. The storyline alludes to Holmes drinking, and Dr Watson likes to gamble, but we don't see them actually drinking and gambling their lives away. Instead we see the flawed characters push themselves beyond their desires to solve the case.

The film also seems to leave the door open to a sequel.

It's official folks!!! The movie will be called The Karate Kid, and Sony has artwork that's that shows a release date of June 11th, 2010. Which means a release after Memorial day, but before the summer. I'm not too sure about this release date being a good idea, however the clip that is available is hot. Don't just take my word on it, judge for yourself. [youtube jy3TwgpOfr0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jy3TwgpOfr0 youtube] There are some out there that think that this film will ruin a fond childhood memory of the original that starred Pat Morita, and Ralph Macchio. Check your preconceived notions at the door and open your mind to the thought that a story line can be adapted (which is different than simply remaking the stale original film) resulting in a story of its own right. While the story is loosely based upon the original (afterall it is an adaptation and not a wholly original work) the trailer shows great promise of a film that could get audiences in a theater to see something other than cars, robots or aliens. Need an incentive for your kids to improve their grades, then this may be the movie to dangle in front of their faces.... I can't wait to see more....

My friend I would say that I have witnessed a dog urinating in public a million times and not once did I view it as entertaining. Just because something is real does not necessarily mean it's entertaining. A film is a form of entertainment. It's a story told with moving pictures. If a writer does not recognize this simple fact his art will wallow in mediocrity. A child being abused is part of the world we live in but when you are making a major motion picture a child being abused is not enough. A screenplay must be more than that if it's going to entertain us. The film "Precious" presents us with child abuse only and this my friend is not enough to be considered a great film.

It doesn't matter whether the screenplay is original or an adaptation the story in this film wreaks of contrivance in my opinion. The lead character is not strong at all simply because the screenwriter bombarded her with one tradgedy after another without melding them together. Because the lead is not strong the supporting cast is weak as well. The lead is not strong enough to create tension between herself and her mother. The lead is a punching bag for the mother and this is not good screenwriting. This film is below average at best.

I liked the acting performances. I thought everyone arrived at this project with their A-Game. I thought this was the best directing job Lee Daniels has ever done. I thought the film did the book justice. I also thought it captured the time period well.

I disliked some of the editing. I disliked the music choices. I disliked some of the lighting choices, though I understand why they were made.

If the topic is the film, which is the topic we're discussing, then I thought it was a well shot, well made film.

Your criticism seems to boil down to "this was a bad story". And that's fine. I'm just saying that the story was a book. Having read the book, I was interested in seeing the film. And the film did the book justice, in my opinion.

your problem seems to be with the book, not the movie. Do you realize this movie was based on a book?

The "Star Power" in this film was pretty much besides the point. Each of the actors had to step outside of themselves and deliver the characters that had been written.

I can't tell if you liked the movie or were just turned off by the story.

I wanted so badly for this to be a great film. It has garnered quite a bit of good reveiws, there is a ton of star power involved with this movie and it's a "black" film. Unfortunately the screenplay does not hold up. I'm sorry but this is hack writing at it's best. The mother of the lead is a classic example. She stands and watches while her daughter is being raped, forces her daughter to eat a pig's feet, hates her own grandchildren and her own mother, forces her daughter to have sex with her and if that's not enough she tells her daughter that she might have AIDS because her father just died from the disease. This is overkill in screenwriting. When the mother stood by and watched her own daughter being raped we that was enough. Because the writer kept piling it on is the sign of a poorly written screenplay. The writer ran out of ideas so he merely repeated himself until he saw there were 120 pages. There are other issues with this screenplay but I think I've made my point. Thumbs down this film.

I saw the movie last night….inspiring, emotional, horrific…these are just some of the words that came to mind. I totally felt the whole light and dark theme because the movie made you feel really good at some points but during others, it was just WHOA….Its so easy to think your life is horrible and that its just the worse setup ever, but watching Precious reminded me that there are people who experience worse, because there are many Clarice Precious' in the world.

I just finished seeing the film "Precious". This is not a great story. Definitely not Oscar worthy. It's a classic example of overkill in screenwriting. AIDS, autism, poverty, welfare, incest, the education system, homosexuality the list goes on and on with this film. The screenwriter chose volume over substance. Another problem is the lead character is not strong at all. Because so many things happen to her (almost in machine gun fashion) the lead comes across as nothing more than a vicitim. A punching bag if you will. This technique leaves the plot with hardly any tension. The dream sequences and the voice over by the lead don't help either (they wreak of hack writing). Another sign of hack writing is what I like to call the interview technique, a cheap form of exposition where one character asks a million questions of another character and gets an answer to every one them. When the lead character is the one answering all the questions it makes the lead come across wimpy and robs the story of conflict. No conflict, no drama, no drama, no story. Thumbs down on this one!

So much of what you say I agree with. Sidibe was fantastic, Monique was fearless in playing this role and Daniels was bold to bring such a story to the big screen. Precious is a statement movie which I define as a film that changes how people look at you and how you look at yourself. You can't help but look at these characters in a different light than they deserve the cards they were dealt. Instead of ignoring or despising these characters you come to care for them, all of them. You can't help but examine yourself and how you think about black people and those that many of us try to avoid everyday. Kudos to Daniels for showing us a different shade of black reminding us that those hues can be beautiful too, and isn't that precious!

You are so right about Viola Davis in this movie. I felt empowered by her character. Did not like the ending of the movie, it was too Hollywood feel-good to a plot that I felt was otherwise dark and clever. While watching this movie, I could feel Gerard Butler's pain and I felt like no matter what he did-his character would never be satisfied.
Favorite scene-the judge and the cell phone. It turned a light, bright scene into a shocker.

For some reason, the audience in this movie laughed a lot. I did too, I don't know if it's because we have come to know and love Jamie Foxx as a comedian. Did any other audience goer have the same reaction?

I was very interested in what you said about Jamie Foxxs's performance.I agree that since "Ali" we got him calling himself some other character's name,but we still saw him.I'm glad to see him have the opportunity to play something "straight" like a plain ordinary DA,with material that he could sink his teeth into.That's why I'm glad that him and Butler switch roles.It seems like he gives a real good nuanced performance in this one.

I saw the movie last Friday. The concept was too implausible to be remotely believable. How long can somebody lie in bed? No plane crashes or bad traffic accidents (I won't explain further, just in case you go see the movie) in the final scenes? The movie must have been financed by the makers of Proczac or Jack Daniels!

It was the biggest disappointment I've had in a movie starring Bruce Willis in a long, long time.

I fear the outcome given the seriousness of this drama. While I respect the achievements of Tyler Perry I find that his movies and plays are formulaic and thus predictable. Thanks to Levar Burton and Reading Rainbow for the years of wonderful, educational learning experiences that was brought to each episode of this PBS show. As sad as I am to see this show go off the air, I must now consider how much money I will be spending buying as many of the RR episodes on dvd. His first feature as far as I can tell, was "Blizzard" in 2003. He has done a lot of TV. He's written a book that you may be interested in, called "Aftermath". It's very Butler-ish sci-fi. Would make an interesting film, I think.

Someone pinch me please. Really, live action. This seems wrong on so many levels. To start it's no one can do the voice like Scatman Crothers did. Ok, so you're going to call me a purist, or a cartoon snob, but someone is going to need to put up a really good argument as to why HKP should become a Live Action Movie. Some things just should not be turned into live action.

I realize that I'm giving away my age by protesting so much, but what's next?

I have a better idea, go for a re-creation of the cartoon so that it airs weekly on Saturdays, just like when some of us were kids.

I would love to see a John Stewart GL Movie. I just don't think that Hollyweird gets it though. You're so right that kids would walk out of the theater and really have the courage of their convictions to think that they could do anything. A black GL, and a Black President of the US. I really can do anything!!! But Hollyweird is all about the Benjamins, and I think they're still not over the whole issue of Steel having only earned a little more than 10% of 16 million dollar production budget.
So we get what they give us…. A Hal Jordan GL Movie
Someone needs to remind Hollyweird that Hancock made a few bucks….

The thing that is saving this so far is that Martin Campbell is a good choice. Haven't seen the script, but as I said, Martin can handle a project where nobody's feeling the new guy. A few things about this are disturbing. For one, the movie is scheduled for a Holiday 2010 release. They start shooting in January. Iron Man 2 is scheduled for the summer. Who in their right mind wants to go behind that? With Ryan Reynolds? This has the scent of "the Spirit" and "Daredevil" on it. In many people's eyes, GL is still an obscure character. Maybe not As obscure as Daredevil or like Moon Knight, but still.

This is the first time I've looked forward to seeing something that cat from The Office is in. I hated that Robin Williams movie. But this looks like a really good story. I am still not convinced that this version of V is worth it. I was a fan of the original, but I don't think I can go through it again. The preview does look like it could be a good pilot episode. But I'm not going to hold my breath.

But there ARE Black actors in this show. Carl Weathers and CCH Pounder ain't exactly new to the business. That's not the problem. It's just a bad show. The show is about a former NFL player who comes home. It's good to have an actual NFL player in the role, it's just a bad show.

Sidney Poitier or Don Cheadle are not going to do a show like this, so it's not really about "where are the real Black actors", it's about why is this show even happening?

is "As The World Turns" a science fiction show? Because I've never seen that show, but this looks great. I can see why they are tying this in with "Lost", it looks like you really have to get into it to follow it. This cast looks good, a lot of good actors, and with only six months of time travel to deal with, it may be easier to follow than "Lost" is.

Did this trailer just come out this week or something? I haven't even seen this on TV yet.

I finally had the chance to watch several of these episodes, thanks to my Mom's DVR over Mother's Day Weekend. I must say, this is an excellent original work. The acting is very good, and alot of thought went in to the character development. This is a start of a work that I hope to see many more seasons. Hopefully future series will be on other portals or I-tunes as I do not have HBO.

Is it too late to chime in on this one??? I know the movie's been out for just over a week now. I admit that I went an saw it on Opening Weekend, without any regrets. Ok, well maybe only 1 regret. I didn't see it in IMAX, but I did see a digital projection. That having been said…

If you didn't see the movie and still plan to don't read me yet…

Also, this is meant to be more of an extension of a conversation and not a final word on the movie. So, please feel free to dispute or agree with anything I write here.

I'd agree with the review for the most part and am actually surprised that there aren't a load of comments yet. This is a strong film. With strong actors. The science however was weak. I had to spend a significant amount of time explaining how there were 2 of the same character in one place at the same time. All because there was a horribly muddled explanation of the time shift in the movie that the D H couldn't wrap his brain around.

Then there was my continual thinking about how since TOS takes place in the future that Kirk actually gets sloppy seconds when it comes to Uhura. That was all that kept racing through my mind. Oh, and while on the subject of the ladies, if Green Ladies from Orion attended the Academy, nothing makes any sense.

This makes for a great launching pad for the franchise to hit the reset button and to launch an updated version of TOS for TV (something has to fill the gap left since Star Gate went of the air).

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the Double tip of the hat did not go unnoticed for Majel Barret Rodenberry in voice or name. I was pleased to know that she had a role in this movie prior to her passing.

Now you know I'm not all that good to be reviewing movies, but people gotta know. Don't do it. This movie is horrible. You start to feel bad for the actors, because this could have been real good! I can't believe they put this out all proud with commercials and whatnot. the action scenes — we all seen before. the script? man the script was nonsense. Whole blocks of years go by…no explanation. characters in the story for no reason. they got powers that could help — but they don't. this was just too many bad things at once!

Thanks for the comments Lyvonne and Euphoria. The documentary from the eighties was created while I was interning at Queens Public Television Studios in NYC. During the time, I was taking a few film courses at York College, and decided on producing a one hour piece with a focus on the Jamaica Bay Wild Life preserve. My focus was environmental at the time, so I felt it would be a nice fit of how the local environment was performing around so much industry. Jamaica Bay is located between Brooklyn and Queens near JFK airport. Most New Yorkers probably have no clue where this is. It is truly, one of the cities jewels. The area is a huge habitat for waterfowl and aquatic species. If you are interested in more about it, please refer to the links I have provided below.

If you want to see more of our works, I will be turning A Brief Spell in to a web series for the Black Box Office. It is a nice fictional story but has a few historical references in it. Later this year we will have a few previews set for our upcoming Sci Fi Piece…

I disagree with this review. I felt this was an ending that could not be any better or worse (from your side of view). Yes, there was so many ups and downs, but go figure, its a Sci Fi. Where tech cannot save humanity from everything, including itself. The extensive plots, huge character development, and diverse crew we are actually lucky it ended on a positive note. Most Sci Fi's do not end on a plus note, and bomb like the weapons they use. I think we the viewer are quite fortunate to have REAL SCI FI. A story, that yes is a remake, but has been stretched for seasons long instead of one or two. A series that has spawned two additional series to feed its franchise. I see this as a wonderful production, with a positive conclusion. I am looking forward to viewing more of the BSG franchise in the years ahead. On the real life side, industry has finally started to understanding better ways to distribute media thru online methods. You know I've seen all this schtick before. But Murph is an undeniable, irrefutable classic. The critics may pan him (and me) for this one too. But dammit, I'm a fan and I will support the man.
